Formaldehyde 35% 25L Formaldehyde is an organic compound with the formula CH2O or HCHO.

A gas at room temperature, formaldehyde is colourless and has a characteristic pungent, irritating odour. Aqueous solutions containing 35% formaldehyde are known as ‘formaldehyde 35/10%’, Formol or formalin, which is a colourless liquid with a pungent, suffocating odour; such solutions usually contain methanol as a stabiliser.

Formaldehyde is an important precursor to many other materials and chemical compounds.

Commercial solutions of formaldehyde in water are used as disinfectants and for preservation of biological specimens. Formaldehyde is broadly effective against bacteria, fungi, mycobacteria, spores and viruses.

Formaldehyde 35/10, Formol or formalin is an approximate 35 to 40% by weight solution of formaldehyde in water, usually with 10 to 15% methanol added to prevent polymerisation. Formalin solutions containing formaldehyde concentrations equal to or higher than 5% are a widely used, effective liquid disinfectant. They are used for the sterilisation of heat-sensitive objects, such as cystoscopes, laparoscopes, blood-stained instruments and haemodialysis instruments.

It is also used in agricultural applications and water treatments.
