Soda Ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃), a white, odourless, and stable powder that dissolves in water to form a slightly alkaline solution. It is known for its consistent quality and purity, its unique alkaline properties and ability to regulate pH make it indispensable in both manufacturing and processing environments. Reliable and versatile, Soda Ash is a key raw material used across multiple industrial applications: Aquarium pH Regulator, Glass Manufacturing, Water Softener, Washing Detergents, Taxidermy, Descaling & Textiles. Uses and applications
Soda ash (sodium carbonate, Na2CO3) is a workhorse alkali used across cleaning, water treatment and manufacturing. This light grade is a fine powder that dissolves quickly, making it ideal for solution dosing.
- Commercial laundry — water softening and detergent boosting
- pH adjustment in pools, effluent and boiler water
- Cleaning product manufacture — often blended with sodium sulphate anhydrous as a carrier
- Dyeing, glass and general chemical use
Light vs dense soda ash
Light soda ash is fine and fast-dissolving; dense (granular) soda ash is heavier, less dusty and easier to meter mechanically. We stock both — see our sodium carbonate granular (soda ash dense) 25kg bag if you need the granular form.
Handling and safety
Soda ash is an irritant in dust form — avoid breathing dust and wear gloves and eye protection when handling. Store dry; it absorbs moisture and CO2 from the air over time. SDS available on request.
Frequently asked questions
Is soda ash the same as washing soda?
Chemically yes — washing soda is sodium carbonate decahydrate (with water of crystallisation), while soda ash is the anhydrous form, so soda ash is stronger weight for weight.
Can I raise pool alkalinity with soda ash?
Soda ash raises pH strongly with a modest alkalinity lift — use it to correct low pH. To raise total alkalinity with little pH change, use sodium bicarbonate instead.
How much soda ash do I add to a laundry wash?
As a detergent booster, 30–60g per standard load depending on water hardness. Commercial operations should dose to their water hardness figures.
