Hydrogen Peroxide 50% IBC is a peroxide and oxidizing agent, its chemical formula is H2O2. It is usually produced as an aqueous solution, available in various strengths. Solutions higher than 8% are corrosive to the skin. It was first recognised in 1818 as a chemical compound, it is the simplest of the class of peroxides. Upon heating, hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen, it also does this when in the presence of numerous substances, including salts or metals such as iron, copper, nickel, chromium, or manganese. It can form crystalline solids useful as mild oxidizing agents when combined with certain compounds. A well-known combination is Sodium Perborate, this is used in laundry detergents and chlorine-free bleaches. With specific organic compounds, hydrogen peroxide will react to form hydroperoxides or peroxides, many of these are then used to initiate polymerization reactions. Most of the time, hydrogen peroxide is oxidizing the other substances, however it can be oxidized itself by a few compounds, such as potassium permanganate. Industrially, hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach chemical pulp recycled pulp and mechanical pulp. It is particularly useful in paper making, to improve brightness stability, increase brightness levels and reduce manufacturing costs, as it is the chemical required. It is also used within the beauty and personal care industry, it can be found in many products including hair dyes, toothpastes, mouthwash, bleaches, bathroom cleaners and laundry stain removers. In lower strengths, it can be found in over the counter first aid antiseptics. It is also used in water treatment.
