Rock Salt 25kg Salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound belonging to the larger class of salts; salt in the form of a natural crystalline mineral is known as rock salt or halite. Salt is present in vast quantities in seawater. The open ocean has about 35 grams (1.2 oz) of solids per liter of sea water, a salinity of 3.5%. Salt is essential for life in general, and saltiness is one of the basic human tastes. Salt is one of the oldest and most ubiquitous food seasonings, and salting is an important method of food preservation. Salt is mostly sodium chloride (NaCl). Sea salt and mined salt may contain trace elements. Mined salt is often refined. Salt crystals are translucent and cubic in shape; they normally appear white but impurities may give them a blue or purple tinge. When dissolved in water sodium chloride separates into Na+ and Cl− ions, and the solubility is 359 grams per litre. From cold solutions, salt crystallises as the dihydrate NaCl·2H2O. Solutions of sodium chloride have very different properties from those of pure water; the freezing point is −21.12 °C (−6.02 °F) for 23.31 wt% of salt, and the boiling point of saturated salt solution is around 108.7 °C (227.7 °F). In its natural form, salt is a crystalline mineral forming rock salt. Rock salt has many purposes including clearing snow and ice, effective weed killer and improves vehicle traction in slippery conditions, however rock salt, due to its form, is not suitable for water softening. De-icing with rock salt
Rock salt is the most cost-effective way to keep roads, paths, car parks and yards safe in winter. Spread ahead of forecast frost or snowfall for best results — pre-gritting stops ice bonding to the surface and works faster than treating ice after it forms.
- Roads, driveways and car parks
- Footpaths, ramps and loading bays
- School, farm and commercial site gritting
Coverage and pack sizes
A 25kg bag treats roughly 250–500 square metres depending on conditions — typical spread rates are 50–100g per square metre, heavier for compacted snow. For sites that grit all season, ask us about pallet quantities (40 × 25kg bags) at trade rates.
Handling and storage
Non-hazardous. Store bags sealed and under cover — rock salt absorbs moisture and will clump if left open to the weather. Gloves are recommended for prolonged handling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between brown and white rock salt?
Both melt ice equally well. Brown rock salt is mined and carries natural grit and mineral content, which aids traction but leaves residue; white salt is cleaner and preferred where marble floors or shopfronts are nearby.
At what temperature does rock salt stop working?
Rock salt is effective down to around −6°C to −8°C. Below that, melting slows significantly and mixing with grit for traction is recommended.
Can I use rock salt to soften water?
No — the mineral content makes it unsuitable for softeners. Use PDV or tablet salt instead; see our PDV salt range.
